Our Love of Tennis and Uncle Ivan

Created by Scott 2 years ago
I met and got to know Paul (or Greeney to his friends) through the great sport of tennis.  For a while in our younger years, Paul and I often practiced together and I have very fond memories of those times, getting to know Paul well and considering him a friend.  Not only did we love tennis but we were also fans of Ivan Lendl, one of the best players in the world at the time - our walks down to the club and breaks in play often led to conversations about Lendl and his latest truimph.  We would often try to pull off great shots in practice that Lendl had used to destroy his opponents and for some reason we started referring to Lendl as ‘Uncle Ivan’.   Paul and I didnt socialise as such outside of tennis but we became friends by spending time on court and sharing the odd drink in the Club bar etc.  Paul was kind hearted and genuine guy, with a great sense of humour, he was fun to be around.  I also got to learn of Paul’s love of artwork and his amazing talents in that area.  For the Club’s 75th Anniversary (25 years ago), Paul designed a commeratice mug, a number of which still sit in the clubs kitchen cupboard today.  More recently, Paul returned to the Club with his wonderdul daughter Isla, a frequent attender at junior coaching sessions at weekends.  Karen the Club Coach at the time was a mutual friend and Paul regularly volunteered to help out at those sessions, purely out the kindness of his heart. I know Karen appreciated Paul’s help very much.  My friend was now a Dad and it was abundently clear how much he loved his young daughter Isla, which was very heart warming to see.  It is great sadness that I learned of Paul’s passing but my many fond memories of our times together means he lives on in my heart, as i am sure he does in so many peolple’s who had the great pleasure and privelidge of knowing him.  Until our reunion on those great tennis courts in the sky, where we will chat about ‘Uncle Ivan’ again I am sure, rest in peace my friend - Scott ❤️
